Program of Women Education and Reform (POWER)
Empowering Women through Interfaith Community Service
Basic education of women is a fundamental human right. As the key to sustainable development and
peace and stability within and among countries, it is an indispensable means for effective participation
within the societies and economies of the 21st century.
The program aims to empower underprivileged domestic worker women in post-conflict communities, by
teaching them basic writing, reading, and arithmetic skills. They will be taught by youth volunteers from
diverse faiths and members of IYA, as a sign of community service, equality, love and tolerance.
Furthermore, capacity-building workshops will be included in the curriculum: one on women´s rights and
the other on small business skills. With this program, IYA not only builds women´s capacities and
improves their families’ living conditions, but also provides a platform for women of diverse faiths and
volunteer teachers from their communities to develop relationships for future collaboration.
Against this background, YDF/IYA opened the first Women Education Center in Shadbagh factory area, Lahore, in January 2011. 25 women signed up for a six month course which they completed in July 2011. Given the high demand and the great success of the “Women Adult Education Program”(WAEP), WFP opened a second center in Pumbay Jogian Taj Park, Lahore, Pakistan in March 2012.
